NHS Data Dictionary and Model

CONSULTANT CODE, GENERAL MEDICAL PRACTITIONER PPD CODE and PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION ENTRY IDENTIFIER - this profile covers the family of professional-regulator registration numbers (GMC, NMC, GPhC, HCPC) plus locally/nationally-issued NHS identifiers (SDS User ID, GMC Reference Number) used to identify a practitioner.

Ubiquitous terms: GMC Number, Doctor Index Number (DIN), Professional Registration Number, Prescriber Code.

PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION ENTRY IDENTIFIER

Format

• N = any number
• A = any alpha
• (*) NHS Prescription Services systems require these prescriber codes to be 8 characters long. Additional zeroes (0) should be inserted immediately following the first 2 alpha characters to extend the code to 8 characters as necessary.
